Moving passkeys between password managers is about to get a lot easier
The new specifications hope to ensure users have a free choice of providers and are free to transfer their passkeys and passwords between their choice of service. This is the first standard of its kind to be introduced to the credential management industry. The draft specifications can be viewed on the FIDO Alliance blog.
Password manager makers want to let you securely transfer passkeys
Passkeys are great — it’s nice to be able to log in to apps and websites without entering a password. But there hasn't been a standard protocol for transferring your passkeys across password managers. The new specifications, the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF), are designed to fill that gap.
Passkeys Will Soon Become Easier to Transfer Between Password Managers
The new standard will work with devices from Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung (among others) and password manager providers such as 1Password and Bitwarden.

By now, most people know passkeys offer a better way to protect their online credentials than passwords. Nearly every tech company of note, including Apple, Google and Microsoft, supports the protocol.
