The U.S. faces an ongoing traffic safety crisis, with more than 40,000 Americans killed in roadway crashes each year – almost equal to the number of gun-related deaths.

Traffic safety advocates, crash survivors, and loved ones of those who did not survive crashes gathered at Hollywood Cemetery Friday morning ahead of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

In the last three years, 508 people have died on Jacksonville roadways. Families of these victims remembered their loved ones and spread awareness for road safety.

More than 2-thousand lives have been lost in Florida car crashes this year. On Duval County roadways, more than 130 lives have been lost. The city of Jacksonville and transportation officials came together at James Weldon Johnson Park to honor those victims.
